The FX30 has left me with a very good impression on Sony, I'm actually excited about its upcoming FX2. From a practical POV, I am in no dire need of a full frame cinema camera. Oh boy, what a long name it is. But anything for the SEO, yes ?
Back then when I upscaled from a M43 to a S35, I'd said exactly the same thing, "I have no actual use for a S35". Maybe it's not so much about the sensor size, instead it's the auto focusing. It's always good to have AF when making home videos, and if you're a Han Solo, autofocusing is a life safer.
I'm still using the Black Magic Pocket cinema 4K, and it's working flawlessly. But...there's always a "but" after a compliment. Its AF is horrible, except that I have learned to embrace the reality, so I'm all good. However, the skin tone rendered by the BMPCC4K is a bit on a reddish side, it becomes quite obvious when parked next to the Sony FX30. I'm rather tanned, quite very tanned in fact. Another word, the Sony makes me a better looking fella.
Is FF better than a S35 ? I don't know. But I know the Sony FX2 has a similar dimension as the FX30, so it wouldn't hurt if I were to go full frame. Sensor size alone is not enough to persuade me, it's the viewfinder of the FX2 that gets me.
Maybe the VF might get in the way, after all it is sticking out like a sore thumb. The good side is, I could check the focus using the VF. I suspect this would come in handy when doing macro. Having a screen on the back of the camera is good, using a bigger screen is even better. But..,again there's a but.
My eyes are getting real bad, it pains me to stare at the screen smaller than a 24" . I'm guessing the VF would soothe me a little.
I imagine the FX2 would be a full pledged cinema camera, but unlike the FX30, its ability to photograph seems to be rather strong. This should come in handy when I'm doing the product shots, I could use only one camera for both film and still.
If I do decide to go with the FX2, it's likely I may retire the BMPCC4K. I need to look good in front of a camera.
